Ireland

This page is still under construction (as of February 2, 1998) and probably always will be. I finally have expanded it into several pages featuring photographs of various parts of Ireland, representing my families travels through on the island during the year that we spent there. I probably will continue to update the pages with different photographs when I get time! Just click on the images for a full sized, downloadable, jpeg image. Also, you will find here links to things Irish.

This picture, of sunrise over Dublin Bay, was taken by my daughter Tricia. I think she took this in September, 1995.

If you are looking for a link to things Irish I can think of no better place to start than Dublin's best newspaper, The Irish Times. Or if you want to listen to the news and weather, and have RealAudio or StreamWorks, try RTE Radio 1. Although I don't know why they bother with a weather report. In Ireland the weather is always "showers with a few bright spells with some sustained rain in the west; tomorrow, showers in the morning with increasing dry spells in the afternoon, except in the west where rain will continue" ...it is the same every day, you just get used to it.

President Bill Clinton addressing the Irish people (about 80,000 of them anyway) in front of the Bank of Ireland building on College Green, Dublin City Center, December 1, 1995. We were in the front "VIP" section getting squashed! You can just see Hillary Clinton seated on the left behind the President. Next to her is seated the Taoiseach (the Irish Prime Minister), John Bruton and Mrs. Bruton.

A really good Irish related link that I recently found on this side of the Atlantic is Cecil's Irish Page It provides links to just about everything Irish including:

Another great feature of the page is the Irish Pub section which contains an archive of Irish jokes. (Believe me, the Irish are anything but politically correct!)

Three typical "Irish" school children, in their uniforms, ready for their first day of school. From left to right they are Tricia (6th year), Nick (4th year) and Will (1st year).

Another good stop on the internet is Anna's Wee Bit of Ireland Pages. This page has files of JPEG images of the Emerald Isles plus sections on genealogy, Irish history, Irish traditions, folklore, culture, proverbs. If you can't visit Ireland yourself, this is almost as good. Well, not really.....

One of the things that I really miss about traveling in Ireland is staying at family-run bed and breakfast inns (or B&Bs as they are called). We did a lot of traveling in Ireland and Scotland and we always stayed at B&Bs. We never found a bad one. The part that liked best was the breakfast! I really go for "rashers" and "bangers" and I really did get to like black and white pudding. My mouth just waters thinking about it! (You don't want to know what goes into black and white pudding!) Anyway, my daughter, Tricia, found a site on the web where you can order an Irish Breakfast (and many other things) Irish Food and Gift Store. If you order on Monday you will have it by Wednesday. I put in an order and sure enough two days later we were enjoying an Irish breakfast just like we remembered from our travels on the Emerald Isle.

On the more serious side is my page on Irish postage Stamps Commemorating the Irish Struggle for Independence, 1916-1923. . It has recieved quite a few hits and I get quite a bit of mail about it. Take a look at it, it may help you to put the "troubles" in Northern Ireland into an historical perspective.

Mickey and I at Powerscourt waterfall, County Wicklow. This picture was taken in June, 1996.
