A letter from Professor Gyori (Hungary) -- January 24, 2005

I knew Bernd Aulbach for many years, and in this time I found him to be a great scholar, and a good friend. His loss will be deeply felt by his family.

He leaves a great body of mathematical work, and his colleagues will remember his industry, encouragement and enthusiasm. His leadership of the ISDE will be sorely missed.

A fitting tribute to his mathematical accomplishments would be a special volume dedicated to him, and I would be honoured to contribute to and assist with this.

Istvan Gyori, Member of Board of Directors, ISDE

A letter from Moritz Simon (Germany) -- January 24, 2005

Dear ISDE members,

it is a huge shock both for me and for the society that Bernd Aulbach passed away. Since, especially for me as a young scientist, he was such an inspiring and motivating person, I decided to attend his funeral together with Andreas Ruffing.

In spite of the grave atmosphere due to Bernd Aulbach's death, I have to admit and want to point out that the ceremonial and the weather on that day have been particularly nice - almost as if the sky wanted to thank god for this beautiful mind. The funeral service was ended by two talks of condolence, one by the chairman at Bernd's department, the other one by a student. In these talks, the great deeds and personality of Bernd Aulbach were reflected in a suitable way.

Finally, at the grave, I expressed my condolence to Bernd's family. I had so many great chats with Bernd during the last ICDEA meetings; he always took his time to talk to me. On the one hand, he was such a friendly person, on the other hand, he was (and still is) an admirable scientific leader.

Let me again express my deep condolence to all of you and of course to Bernd Aulbach's family.

Best wishes

Moritz Simon

A letter from Professor Bohner (USA) -- January 27, 2005

Dear Colleagues,

it has been almost two weeks now since our friend and colleague Bernd Aulbach suddenly and unexpectedly passed away. I am still in a state of shock, and it is still so hard to believe that it is true. Today even I received a package from him! I have not opened it yet, but it probably contains the proceedings of the Augsburg conference.

We will never forget him as a great person, an excellent organizer and leader, and an extraordinary mathematician. As an example, which is concerned with one of my research areas, we will never forget that it was him who suggested to Stefan Hilger to create a theory to combine differential and difference equations, which later became known as the theory of dynamic equations on time scales.

Again, I would like to express my deep condolences to Bernd Aulbach's family, his friends, his students, and all of his colleagues.

Sincerely,

Martin Bohner, Member of Board of Directors, ISDE
